Big Switch, Big Money
Anna* moved to Momentum Realty to start her own business in March -- and June will be the biggest month of her career. Here’s how she got there:
“The quarantine gave me time to do some reflecting and understand what I want in life, and not just my one-year goal, but in 5 years … and I realized I wasn’t working toward any kind of 5-year plan.”
Anna, a 3-year agent, was miserable at her old brokerage. “Someone else dictated every hour of my time; I was like a robot. I was selling 30+ homes a year but nothing was under my own name, so it was like I didn’t even exist on the MLS. I was putting in all the work to build someone else’s name and legacy.”
“My broker was buying me leads and I always had a roof over my head, but there was no longer room to grow,” she noted. “I didn’t feel like I really had my own customers. I was working 7 days a week, really hard, and just wanted to stop and do something for myself.”
Anna planned to switch to another traditional brokerage, a slightly less restrictive, “watered-down version” of her old one, until a friend suggested she talk with Jon at Momentum. After an “awesome” phone conversation, Jon asked her to meet for coffee and go over some numbers.
“I met Jon, and it was just the most eye-opening conversation I’ve ever had about my own career and where I want to go. I felt like I’d been brainwashed before, and now my mind was opened up to so many different opportunities on how I could run my business and still have my quality of life.”
“It almost didn’t seem real,” Anna added. “Jon just sat there and did the math. Then, he said, ‘If you want me to buy the leads and you do the work and you give me half the money, cool; I’ll make a fortune off you. Or do you want to do that yourself and keep your money?’”
Anna realized Jon was right, and decided not to move forward with the other team. “I want to build my own legacy and run a successful business,” she said. “It was kind of a no- brainer after I met with Jon. I decided to be my own agent and start my own gig.”
“I respect that Momentum doesn’t accept all agents like most other brokerages do,” Anna said. “They want like-minded, top-producing agents so we can all collectively grow. That strategy is one of the many reasons I wanted to join. We just have this amazing bunch of individuals.”
“Momentum is always trying to get everyone’s input,” Anna continued. “We’re constantly hearing about each other’s challenges and doing scripts because the smallest tweaks can sometimes get you a long way. Momentum is constantly figuring out ways and programs where we can excel and be constantly learning and growing and never get stagnant. “
“They also bring in top coaches and trainers. Honestly, it’s really crazy for a 100% commission model, but it’s priceless. With all the training they have for us, I’ve never felt so secure.”
Anna said she has her quality of life back, making double her money while working smarter. “My old broker was always telling me to get in front of the buyer no matter what. So, I’d drive an hour away to meet them, and it could be a huge time-waster. If I had a dollar for every person I’ve met that never talked to me again, I’d be rich.”
“This is a time management business, so time is money. Now I have a whole different strategy. I’ve implemented buyer consultations and I’m setting the tone upfront so that I’m in control. I’m a professional and not someone’s door opener. Before I meet a Buyer in person, I’m understanding exactly what they need, what will be best for them, where they are in this process,” Anna added, noting Momentum’s Buyer Loyalty Agreement is also a good tool for time management. “And these changes are all because of Momentum.”
“I’m also building my referrals. My old brokerage didn’t touch their closed customers; it wasn’t a priority. But Momentum cares about their relationships with customers, and is constantly implementing programs for past customers to get benefits like a free AC cleaning, or free movie screening.”
“They care about what happens after the transaction, not just what immediately benefits them. They want to increase the share of the business that is referral-based.” Anna plans to subscribe to Momentum’s optional Focus customer touch subscription program in order to enhance her relationships with past customers.
Anna has advice for agents considering a move to Momentum:
“It does require more self-discipline,” Anna said. “So, I am grateful for my past experience, I don’t regret it at all, because it helped me with that.”
“Sit down and do the numbers to see how much money you’re losing at your current brokerage, and if it’s too much, come without a second thought,” Anna said. “Just the training and the constant growth that Momentum offers is worth it 110% … and that’s not even touching on the fact you get to keep virtually your entire paycheck.”
